Conquer Your Giants With God's Help

Deuteronomy 3:10-11 - We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah and Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan.(Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites. His bed was decorated with iron and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide. It is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites.)

Moses made sure to include in the last portion of the story of their journey…the victory God had given them over the giants that lived east of the Jordan River. They were so large their beds were around 14 feet long and 6 feet wide. God delivered all of the towns of this king to the Israelites.

It started me thinking about the giants in my own life…and whether I have allowed God to give me victory over them. One huge win for God was my education.  He took a girl with horrible ACT scores…graduated her from college…even allowed her to get a master’s and above degree so she could teach for 34 years.  He gave me victory over the guilt and pain divorce causes.  He is working on delivering me from the continued pain and grief that comes from losing a loved one.

I am no expert…but love the 4 part battle plan Joyce Meyers gleaned from 1 Samuel 17…the story of how young David conquered Goliath.  First…we must ignore criticism.  Then we need to remember all the victories God has given us from the past. Third…speak God’s word over our giant. And after God has given us our victory we need to make sure to glorify him...even thank him and give him all the credit.

I have let my most recent giant kick my butt as of late…and as usual needed this reminder. I don’t have to lose ground in my battle against grief…I can defeat it entirely with God’s help. I can receive that joy that comes in the morning that David talked about in Psalm 30. That joy will eventually replace my grief with the peace that passes all understanding talked about in Philippians 4.

Father…thank you for the reminder that you can help e conquer any giant that I may have to face in this earthly home.  Forgive me for the times that I allow them to hold me back and keep me in sadness.  Help me to claim Philippians 4:7…And feel the sweet peace of God, which passeth all understanding,  keeping my heart and mind free of any thought of failure… through Christ Jesus. Amen.

Love MY neighbor as MY self.

Deuteronomy 2:4-6 -  Give the people these orders: ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful.  Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.   You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.

Moses continued to recount the journey God took the people he had called Moses to lead. He started where he had left off…and covered the trek from Seir to the refusal of King Sihon to let them pass through his land. They conquered every land as they traveled closer to the Promised land…except for two…the land he gave to Lot…and the land he gave to Esau.

Even though these groups were weak and easily overcome…God specifically told them not to even bother them. He allowed them to buy supplies from them with money…and simply pass through these areas. He made sure they knew that God had made them promises too… he had given them land and promised to care for them as well. 

What a great reminder that just because God loves us and promises to care for us does not mean that everything in the world is ours. He makes specific promises to care for us…we must listen to what he gives to us…and what is meant for others he is caring for as well.

It is also a reminder that we are never to take advantage of others that might be weaker than us. How we treat others shows what character God is building in us. How we treat others shows God if we are learning the lessons he is teaching us about loving others more than ourselves.

Father thank you for the reminder that I am called to treat others with more respect and love than I even give myself.  Forgive me for the times that I forget that showing your love is more important than receiving things from you.  Help me to live out the two most important commandments from Matthew 22:37-39 …and ….“Love the Lord MY God with all MY heart and with all MY soul and with all MY mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love MY neighbor as MY self.” Amen.

Use The Past Only To Move Forward From Your Pain

Deuteronomy 1:1 - These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan—that is, in the Arabah—opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.

Before they crossed over to the land God had promised them….Moses was moved to read the law God had given them at Mount Sinai. He began with God’s command to begin their journey….then recounted all the decisions they had made that lengthened the 11 day trek to a 38 year sojourn. Before the children of the ones who said no to God so long ago move into the Promised Land…Moses makes sure he retells the story to them…so they can give thanks to God for all the mercies they had received.

What a great reminder that the past has a purpose.  We should revisit it from time to time…just to remind us of the mercies God has shown us throughout the life he gave us.  If we take a bit of time…to make a timeline of our life….birth to present…I am sure that each mercy God has shown to us would be evident as we list each choice we made to get us where we stand today.

It is also a reminder not to let ourselves get stuck in the past. Some of the events of our life….especially the tragedies… don’t always seem merciful. If we let ourselves get caught up in the sadness that those thoughts bring…we don’t move forward into the blessings God meant for us to have after he allowed such sorrow in our heart. We never see the blessings that surely come when God leads us completely though our wilderness.

King David put it this way in Psalm 30:5…” For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime.  Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Go may use some pretty hard things in our lives to teach us what he knows we need to know…but as Lamentations 3:22-23 says… “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

As usual…I personally needed this great reminder.  If you follow my blog...you know that I did not post for a few days…and since then my writing has been at best sporadic. I’ve been stuck….remembering the sweetest gift God ever gave me 6 years ago on father’s day….and how his time with me was so short. I am so glad God is merciful…and did not allow me to stay stuck too long. He timed my summer visit with my granddaughter at just the right time.

Father…thank you for the lessons in life that teach us the hardest lessons.  Forgive me for allowing the sadness of my lesson to stick me in grief … separating me from the great indwelling of knowledge …wisdom and strength that you give me each morning when I visit with you. Thank you for sending a distraction to my grief...so that I could concentrate more on the blessings and mercies that have come from enduring it. Thank you for this new morning….help me to use it to move forward from my pain even further…so you can use me to do your will.  Amen.

Jesus Is The Perfect Solution To Every Problem

Numbers 3:5-7 -   Then at the Lord’s command Moses gave this order to the Israelites: “What the tribe of the descendants of Joseph is saying is right. This is what the Lord commands for Zelophehad’s daughters: They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their father’s tribal clan.  No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors.

God had given land to a group of daughters because the father died with no sons. This would have been great if these women never married out of the tribe.  So some of the family chiefs raised the new problem to Moses. Moses saw the new problem that was created by solving this dilemma for the daughters created immediately…and quickly brought Gods answer back to them.  They would need to agree to marry within the tribe…or lose the inheritance.

My favorite commentator these days…David Guzik…. quickly brought my thoughts to see a truth of every solution man has ever tried to implement to the problems of this world. He said… “There are rarely perfect solutions to problems.  There are usually answers that are trade-offs in other areas.  Maturity helps us make and accept the ‘right’ decision…even when it’s not perfect.”

What a great reminder that the only perfect solution was the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross. Even after such a great sacrifice…many people choose not to take advantage of his perfect solution to the evil in this world. Perhaps it is because they are in denial of the last days God has given us to preach his gospel to the entire world. I sure am guilty of not making this a priority on some days.

Father…thank you for the reminder that the perfect solution to all problems has already put in motion our only hope of salvation and life for eternity. Forgive me for the times that I have taken that for granted.  Help me to gain strength this morning from the love you gave me when I believed in you….and show me ways to be used to share the love you gave me with others. Amen.

Sprinkle God's Love To EVERYONE

Numbers 35:1-3 - On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, the Lord said to Moses,  “Command the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. And give them pasturelands around the towns.  Then they will have towns to live in and pasturelands for the cattle they own and all their other animals.

Since the Levite’s inheritance was God…they received no portion of the land of Canaan when they crossed over.  God had another plan in mind that would guarantee that they were dispersed throughout the enormous area of land he was giving to his people. Each tribe…decided by size….was to give the Levites cities to live in from among their inheritance. Each city was to have an area of common ground around it so the Levites would have a place for their animals as well.

What a great reminder that we as Christians are not to separate ourselves so much that we alienate our lost neighbors.  One of my ‘go to’ commentators…..David Guzik… put it this way… “In the same way, God does not intend that there be a Christian country or state where all the Christians live together in spiritual bliss, and simply say to the world, come and join us if you want. Instead, God wants Christians to be sprinkled throughout the whole world, influencing people for Jesus Christ.”

The Great Commission clearly says …”go ye therefore.”  And in the wake of one of the most horrific hate crimes of our history….perhaps it is a reminder that we have alienated ourselves a little too much from those that need the Lord the most. I see people who under normal circumstances would not have stepped anywhere near a ‘gay bar’ rallying to help and comfort the gay and lesbian community in their great loss.

Thank you Lord for the reminder that I am to sprinkle the love you gave me to all people…regardless of my comfort around their choices in life.  Forgive me for judging too much and loving too little. Help me to dissolve all of the reasons and excuses my heart tries to give for not sharing your love with EVERYONE.  Amen.

This is Not My Permanent Home

Numbers 34:13-15 - Moses commanded the Israelites: “Assign this land by lot as an inheritance. The Lord has ordered that it be given to the nine and a half tribes, because the families of the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance. These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance east of the Jordan across from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”

Before they crossed over to take the land God had promised them….Moses was told to explain that all of them would receive a portion of it as an inheritance. Just as the 2 ½ tribes had been granted a portion of land on the east side of the river Jordan…they would receive a portion of the land on the other side. It was a gift from God….that every one of his children would share a portion of.

Baker’s Evangelistic Dictionary puts it this way… “ In the theological sense, to inherit means to "receive an irrevocable gift" with an emphasis on the special relationship between the benefactor and the recipients. Unlike legal inheritance, the benefactor, God, does not die, yet he provides material and spiritual blessings for his people.”

What a great reminder of the inheritance God has promised all believers.  Our inheritance is not earthly…but Heavenly.  Titus 3:7 says… “ That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Like the criminal next to Christ… that was saved by God’s grace and the blood his son shed on the cross…Jesus prepares a place in Heaven for all who believe in him.

It is also a reminder that this earth is not my permanent home.  I am here but for a moment….only to complete God’s will…whatever he reveals that to be. When I cross over into the heavenly realm...all will be revealed…all will be made clear.  I will have no more questions.

Father…thank you for the reminder that I am your heir. Thank you in advance for the home you are preparing for me in Heaven.  Forgive me for the times that I take this gift from you for granted.  Help me to be a more diligent worker for you in the time you have assigned to me on earth.  Amen.

Are You Making Progress?

Numbers 33:1-2 - Here are the stages in the journey of the Israelites when they came out of Egypt by divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.  At the Lord’s command Moses recorded the stages in their journey. This is their journey by stages:

God told Moses that it was important for him to write down a complete list of everywhere they journeyed on the way to the Promised Land. And so Moses began with the exodus from Egypt and recorded everywhere they had stopped to camp. I counted 38 camps in the 40 years they wandered.  They moved constantly…but made no real progress toward the land God had promised them…because of their stubborn spirits.

As I read the long list of cities…wildernesses and mountains…I couldn’t help but wonder how long my own list would be. If I started with my salvation at fourteen…the list of places God has led me to and through is just as long. I realized just how much I resemble the stubborn selfish spirits of these people…and had to ask myself if I am making any progress in my relationship with God.

The older I get…and the further away from some of the harder things God has held my hand through…the more I realize the training some of the stops in my own journey has provided for today. My teenage years taught me how to love the Lord with all my heart.  My young adult years gave me an education that would grow over the years into a gift of writing and teaching. And now as I grow older God is teaching me to love unconditionally and depend on only him.

It helps me to lift up praises and thanks for every stop along the way.  It reminds me that even though some of my stops were not pleasant times in my life…they taught me important things about God that I could not have learned any other way. It makes me all the more thankful for this season of life that I am in now…enjoying reconnecting with family…using my retirement to help out with many ministries in my new church. Perhaps I am finally making a bit of progress in my relationship with God. 

Father…thank you for the training each piece of my life journey has given me.  Forgive me for the time that I complained…or doubted that where I was could be turned into something good and used for your glory.  Help me to utilize each moment of each stage of my training to help you further the kingdom of God. Help me to remember to stop and thank you for each experience in my life…good or seemingly bad. Amen.
