Job 25:1-6 - Then
Bildad the Shuhite replied: "Dominion and awe belong to God; he establishes order in the heights of heaven. Can his forces be numbered? Upon whom does his
light not rise? How then
can a man be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure?
If even the moon is not
bright and the stars are not pure in his eyes, how much less man, who is but a maggot-- a son
of man, who is only a worm!"
Bildad took one more turn to speak. He called God the keeper of uncountable
angels…who gives order to the Earth and all that his light shines down on. He
just could not understand how Job could continue to claim righteousness…he just
would not concede that it was possible. He
calls man a maggot…and a worm in God sight.
Bildad was right about the glory and majesty of God. God is
higher that we could ever imagine with our human brains. Ezra said it best in 1 Chronicles 29:11…. “"Yours,
O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the
majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the
dominion, O LORD, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. “
But…Bildad crossed the line with his analogy that man was
such a lowly creature. We are fearfully and wonderfully made….according to
Psalms 139:14. And David also said that God made man …a little less than the
angels…in Psalms 8. That sure does not fit Bildad’s assumption that we are so
low we are worms.
It reminds me which side I belong on though…because God is
in control …of all things…heavenly and earthly.....and that includes man. We are reminded in Romans 3:22-24 that our
only hope is to be washed clean with the blood of Jesus Christ. It says…. “even the righteousness of God
through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no
distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption
which is in Christ Jesus.”
Father…I am amazed every time you remind me that you loved
me so much that you gave your son to die for my sins….so I could be raised to
walk beside you some day in Heaven. Thank you for your love and care…and grace…and
mercy…and provision…despite the fact that I do not deserve one bit of it. Help me to always remember that you control
the stars in the sky…and the things that happen on Earth. Help me to always thank you for all you have
done and continue to do in my life. Amen.
