Matthew 20:26-28 - Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great
among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and
to give His life a ransom for many.”
Jesus had tried to explain His death and resurrection
to the disciples for the third time…but His words did not spur questions of why
He was going to die and be raised again.
His word spurred the disciples to debate about who would be the greatest
in His kingdom. One mother even joined the discussion…asking for preferential
treatment for her two sons.
Jesus was clear that whoever joined Him
would Have to drink of the same cup He did...then He reminded them of the
importance of humility and servanthood. The first would have to see the need to
be last…to give their life in service to others.
I admit that to become a servant is not the
easiest of tasks. It requires us to
leave our selfish human natures completely behind and trust God completely to
provide what we need. It requires an
attitude of love that surpasses all judgmental actions. It requires that we
become people driven by compassion and mercy…not worrying about what we might
get out of our good deeds.
Father…thank you for the reminder that we
are to strive to become like you….and give my life to others so that they may receive
the eternal life that you so freely gave to me. Forgive me for the times that I
have let my selfish nature win out once more…and clung to the world and the
good things it provides. Help me to let
go of all the things of this world so that you can instill in my heart a true
servant attitude like your son had….willing to die to save mankind…all of mankind. Amen.
