Ephesians 5:15-18 - So
be careful how you act; these are difficult days. Don’t be fools; be wise: make
the most of every opportunity you have for doing good. Don’t
act thoughtlessly, but try to find out and do whatever the Lord wants you to. Don’t
drink too much wine, for many evils lie along that path; be filled instead with
the Holy Spirit and controlled by him.
Paul speaks here of the importance of letting love control
our actions….being submissive to God and letting the Holy Spirit control
everything we do. It isn’t how much of
the Holy Spirit we have…it is how much we let the Holy Spirit inside us control
what we do.
Paul says that wisdom is found in making the most of every
opportunity we are given for doing good. Wisdom is found in trying to seek God’s
will and follow it with all our heart.
Wisdom is seeing the hidden traps in things like alcohol… legal and permissible
in society at a given age…but easily used in the wrong ways to control the mind
and heart.
One of the keys to gaining strength to fight the temptations
of such sin is fellowship with other Christians. Paul says to spend our time singing hymns…and
praising God for everything in our lives. He says to make music in our hearts
to God. He says to discuss the scriptures with others that are trying to learn
what God needs from them each day.
Father…thank you for the reminder that the Holy Spirit is to
control our every thought and action. Forgive me for the times that I forget that
the Holy Spirit is inside me and can power me to do all things through you. Help me to learn to use the Holy Spirit to
control the temptations that the world throws in my pathway to separate me from
your love. Amen.
