Genesis 15:4-6 - And behold, the word
of the Lord came to
him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your
own body shall be your heir.” Then He brought him
outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able
to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed in
the Lord, and He accounted it
to him for righteousness.
Abram had just rescued his
brother Lot and refused any reward or spoils from the King of Sodom. He returned to his tents with the feeling of
victory in his heart…but it was dampened by the doubt and questions his logic
was generating about the promise God had made him. God spoke the comforting
words… “Do not be afraid” …and took him
out to reaffirm the promise he had made with a visual Abram would never be able
to question.
People have tried to number the
stars…scientists estimate that there are between 100 - 300 billion in just our
milky way galaxy alone. They say we can see around 3,000 of them on a clear moonless
night with the unaided eye...and over 100,000 if we have a small telescope. I just
bet it was a clear moonless night when Abram stepped out for his lesson in
positivity with God.
I have always known in my heart
that God understands when we question his promises. Life throws some curve
balls… and the logic that we were taught in school just can’t visualize the infinite
possibilities that God will use to keep a promise he made to us. God may not give us direct answers like he
gave Abram that day….he may make us wait what seems like an eternity… but he
will give us the peace that passes our logical mind if we believe in what he
says like Abram.
Moses questioned God….Job
questioned him…Mary even asked the angel sent to her how she could possibly
bear a child if she had never been with a man. The key to their success was the
fact that when God answered each of them…they believed….and allowed God as much
time as he needed to manifest his promise to them.
I admit that waiting is hard
work. Waiting requires a deep belief…a
belief that is supported by daily prayer and Bible study…and fellowship with
others that also believe in the promises of God. God’s waiting room may have painful lessons
meant to teach us exactly what we will need when we are finally called out of
the waiting room to receive the promise we never stopped believing in.
Father…thank you for the reminder
that it’s okay to ask you questions and feel doubts while we wait on your
perfect timing. Forgive me for the many times that I allow logic to fuel the
fire of fear that keeps me from complete belief. Help me to deepen my love for you through prayer
and Bible study and fellowship with others that believe in you so I can feel
that comfort and peace that you give when we truly believe in your
promises. Amen
