Worship Takes More Than One

1 Chronicles 23:28-30 -  The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God.  They were in charge of the bread set out on the table, the flour for the grain offerings, the unleavened wafers, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size.  They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD. They were to do the same in the evening

David realized his age was limiting his ability to rule with all his heart….so he called together the leaders of Israel to have Solomon anointed king.  At the time 38,000 Levites were counted as viable men to serve God in the temple alongside Solomon.  David took the initiative to divide them into groups…so that every aspect of worship could be given detailed attention….and worship could be its very best.

The high priest was always chosen form Aaron’s descendants…but it took more than a high priest to insure that worship was always at its highest in the temple.  There were at least 24 other jobs to complete…so that everyone who brought a sacrifice to the temple….was able to experience God to his fullest….as they handed it over to the priest for the sins they may have committed.

What a great reminder that we are all important to the healthy function of the church.  From the custodians who clean the house of God…to the Pastor who delivers the words of God….we all have a part to play in making sure everyone who comes to worship can feel the presence of God in that sanctuary.  Worship simply requires the combined effort of many people…many jobs…both before…during …and after a service.

Some of the jobs are listed here can be combined with Paul’s words in Ephesians 4:11-12…“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,  to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” Let’s add to that the need for worship music… and ushers….and greeters….and  I think we may have touched on David’s vision of the church he wanted his son to build for the God he loved so very much.

Father...thank you for David’s heart …that saw a vision of complete worship to a God who called for us to praise and revere his holiness.  Help me to consider my part in keeping my church ready and prepared for others to come and worship you. Speak clearly to me the job you would have me do for you in the church…whether it be teaching…cleaning….cooking….singing…or preaching.  And as you speak jobs to the others in our many churches…organize us like David organized this first temple….so that worship will always please you…and drive our hearts to love you more and more each day. Amen.
