Psalm 8:1-5 - O LORD our Lord, how excellent is
thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the
heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou
ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy
and the avenger. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy
fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is
man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest
him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and
hast crowned him with glory and honour.
It amazes me to read some of the words of David…written at
one of the dismal times of his life. Every time I read one of David’s Psalms…I
can’t help but visualize him sitting in a dark cave…hiding…fearful of what was
to come of him each day. But I think
this one might have been written at night….as he reminisced of his childhood…thinking
perhaps of the sheep he cared for as a boy.
These words speak of the glory of a majestic God…and his
love of the things he created…all of it. From the conception of a small baby…to
the last breath all of us eventually take…we are fearfully and wonderfully
made. God’s existence and glory doesn’t
negate a need for man…it is completed in the love he had in his heart when he
made us.
One has just to think on one thing if they doubt David’s
words of truth. John 3:16 says… “For God
so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.” God loved us …all of
us…so much that he sent his only son to die on a cross….so that we might be
able to join him some day in Heaven.
That thought never ceases to amaze me.
Father…I thank you that you love me…and care for me…and made
me just a little lower than the angels …so I could have a relationship with you…and
experience the great love that overflows form your heart to everything you
made. Like David…I am amazed that you
loved any man enough to never give up on us…and the way we drift toward our
selfish flesh each day. Help me to always remember that the love you planted in
my heart the day I asked you to be my savior…needs to be nurtured so it will
overflow to others around me…so I can love the way you loved me. Amen.
